Guidelines for Preventing Workplace Violence for Health Care and Social Service Workers, (U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA 3148, 1998). The publication and distribution of these guidelines is OSHA'S first step in assisting health care and social service employers and providers in preventing workplace violence. OSHA plans to conduct a coordinated effort consisting of research, information, training, cooperative programs, and appropriate enforcement to accomplish this goal.

These guidelines are designed to assist health care providers, employers of health care workers, security and safety personnel, compliance officers, and other interested persons in developing, implementing and evaluating programs to protect health care workers. While not exhaustive, the guidelines include policy recommendations and practical corrective methods to help prevent and mitigate the effects of assaults.
